If you've had your Escape for a few years, you've most likely gone through at least one battery- and if you've looked for the battery, you've found it waaaaaay in the back corner tucked under the wipers and against the firewall.
"WHY, FORD, WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO US?!?!"
... I can't tell you how many YouTube comments share that sentiment- I agree. It's ridiculous. There are two main methods that are tried and true for getting your old battery out: 1. Top Down Access via Wipers and Cowl Removal (this post) 2. Forward Sliding Access via Air Box Removal
I am preferential towards the top down access as I'm not a very tall person and reaching into the engine bay from the front of the vehicle, leaning down, and then sliding everything towards me doesn't quite work.
The airbox method works, but I am not a fan of having to pull the battery forward to then continue disconnecting cables and wiring.
With the top down access, you can safely disconnect everything and make a clear plan of removal. Reinstallation is nice too as you just drop it in and reconnect everything.
The one thing you need to watch out for with this wiper / cowl removal method is when you reinstall your wipers. If they're not operating properly after this procedure, check out our video here to recalibrate them after having the wiper motors go back to their "home" position when the vehicle is in PARK.
As for the actual procedure, you're going to be removing the following:
Wiper Arm Nuts
Wiper Arms
Brake Fluid Reservoir (detaching- not removing!)
Clips (securing upper and lower cowls)
Upper Cowl
Lower Cowl
Negative terminal cable
Battery Retaining Bracket
Positive terminal cable
